In film, costume design plays a vital role in storytelling, they virtually help in representing character's mood and personality, Costumes serve as silent storytellers, establishing the tone for both individual roles and the overarching plot.
Bollywood has been know to influence fashion trends for a long time. Each decade has experienced a new fashion trend and trendsetter in Bollywood, in 1940s and 1950s the saris were fashionable elegant and covered most of the body. While in next decades we saw tight short dress with bold makeup.
Now let's look at some of the iconic costumes of Bollywood.
1. Madhubala's Anarkali dress - Mughal-e-azam (1960)
Madhubala wore a silhouette that was popular with Kathak dancers. It became so popular that the dress was named after her character in movie "Anarkali". The trends continued throughout 70s and 80s and is still going on.
2. Sharmila Tagore's blue bikini - An evening in Paris (1967)
Costume was designed by Mani J.Rabadi, she was one of the 1st Bollywood star to appear in bikini on big screen.
Costume was designed by Bhanu Athaiya, her retro dance in "Aajkal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche" involved a lot of twisting and shaking. She was nervous while dancing in saare so Bhanu Athaiya designed a pre-stitched saare, that gave her mermaid like silhouette, it became a rage and the party look of that time. It began an era of saare gown which continues till date.
4. Dimple Kapadia's polka dot dress - Bobby (1973)
Costume designed by Mani J.Rabadi, Dimple was only 16 years when the movie was released, At such a tender age, Dimple Kapadia carried off some modern dress such as short skirts, tank tops, and two-piece bikinis as effortlessly. her iconic polka dot trend that went viral.
5. Sridevi's chiffon blue saare - Mr. India (1987)
Costume designed by Shalini Shah, In the Movie Mr. India Sridevi wore chiffon blue saare after which it became trend and Indian Market was fill with chiffon saare because of high demand, till date it is not out of style and recently in the movie "Rocky or Rani ki prem khani" Alia bhatt seen wearing the chiffon saare which came in trend again.
6. Madhuri Dixit's purple lehenga - ham aap ke hai kon (1994)
Costume designed by Shabina Khan, Madhuri Dixit wore backless blouse that became such a hit that it was replicated at every Indian wedding. The royal purple saare with embroidered Pallu became one of the most talked sari and it even set the trend for purple in the wedding seasons.
Costume designed by Manish Malhotra. This iconic green lehenga gained immense popularity following the movie’s release.
8. Aishwarya Rai's purple lehenga - ham dil de chuke sanam (1999)

11. Sushmita Sen's Chiffon saare - Main hu Na (2004)
Manish Malhotra recreated the retro Chiffon saare look with a Zeenat Aman vibe to portray a modern professor look with minimal accessories, and due to her famous outfits in movie the Poster of the Movie was recreated to include her.
12. Aishwarya Rai's Blue and white dress - Dhoom 2 (2006)
